Small Country, Big Charm

Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is easy to overlook. Nestled between Switzerland and Austria, this tiny principality measures just 160 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest countries in the world. Yet what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in Alpine charm. Snow-capped mountains rise dramatically behind the capital Vaduz, where a medieval castle overlooks the Rhine Valley. Quaint villages dot the hillsides, ski slopes offer uncrowded runs, and the entire country can be crossed in under an hour. Despite its size, Liechtenstein holds its own identity: a ruling prince, its own stamps beloved by collectors, and a proud independence maintained for over 300 years. For travelers collecting countries or seeking a unique Alpine escape without the crowds of larger neighbors, Liechtenstein offers a charming detour that punches well above its weight.

Birthday on the Slopes

Our Liechtenstein Getaway

Some trips are about ticking off bucket list destinations. Others are about celebrating special moments in unexpected places. Our Liechtenstein trip is both.

We are visiting this tiny Alpine principality in winter to celebrate Marlene's birthday in a memorable way: with her very first skiing experience. While Tom has been on skis before, Marlene will be stepping into ski boots for the first time, learning to navigate the slopes surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.

Beyond the skiing, we want to explore what makes this microstate tick. Vaduz, the capital, is small enough to walk in an afternoon, yet offers surprising depth with its castle perched above the town, excellent art museums, and cozy Alpine restaurants. The winter landscape transforms the country into a snow-covered postcard, with the Rhine Valley stretching below and peaks rising all around.

There is something special about visiting one of the world's smallest countries. Every corner feels personal, every encounter intimate. For Marlene's birthday, we cannot imagine a more unique setting than learning to ski in a place most people simply drive through without stopping.

Stay tuned for our winter tales from the little principality!
