Unexpected Discoveries

The places that weren't in our guidebooks but stole our hearts

South Dakota

Wall Drug & The Corn Palace

Two quintessentially American roadside attractions. Wall Drug's free ice water tradition started during the Depression and still draws millions. Mitchell's Corn Palace - the world's only palace made of corn - hosts concerts in a building decorated with 275,000 ears of corn annually.

New Mexico/Texas Border

Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico

Cross the Rio Grande by rowboat from Big Bend National Park into this tiny Mexican village frozen in time. No cars, no wifi, just friendly locals, handmade crafts, and the best tacos you'll find on either side of the border. One of the most unique border crossings in North America.

South Carolina

Congaree National Park

America's least-visited national park protects the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest. The synchronized firefly displays in late May/early June create a magical light show that rivals any theme park - but you need to win a lottery for tickets.

Wyoming

Devils Tower at Night

While most visitors see this volcanic neck during the day, staying after dark reveals one of the darkest skies in America. The tower silhouetted against the Milky Way creates an almost alien landscape. Camp at the base for the full experience of prairie dogs greeting the sunrise.
